Continental deep drilling program Windischeschenbach
In the fourth infographic for the GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences on the topic “scientific drilling”, I illustrated the Continental Deep Drilling Program (KTB) Windischeschenbach in 3D. At this site in the Upper Palatinate, the GFZ is researching the formation of the earth’s crust, deep water, ore deposition and ore minerals, the geophysics of fracture zones and the temperature profile. The place is very special: at over 9 km, the deepest hole in the world was drilled into our planet here. It provides one of the world’s best-studied drilling profiles and thus offers an impressive view of the earth’s interior.
