A heart that can be repaired

The October 2014 issue of bild der wissenschaft explains how fully functional heart muscle cells can grow from stem cells. This process is not easy and requires many intermediate steps – but it could actually become a reality one day, for example to repair a heart after a heart attack. The heart is given a plaster, so to speak, and previously scarred tissue can heal again. Armed with the tools of a sewing studio, I have illustrated the path from stem cells to the finished “heart tissue patch” in a two-page infographic and sewn a heart out of terry cloth to match – including veins, arteries and aorta.
