Boats as messengers
For a special issue of bild der wissenschaft magazine on the subject of brain doping, I illustrated the corresponding infographic using a “synapse map”. Ships with letters on board serve as messenger substances (or “boat substances”) that transport the information across the synaptic cleft (the “sea”) from one nerve cell to the next. This process can be manipulated in various ways, as the seven stations in the diagram clearly show: for example, by supplying energy, giving messenger production a good boost or blocking the enzymes that normally break down the messenger substances again. Even camouflage and deception are at work when it comes to stimulating the docking sites of the messenger substances.
